The game of golf provides boundless recreational opportunities and health benefits to millions of golfers worldwide. As both a golfer and a golf course designer, I believe that golf courses should exist in harmony with nature. Therefore, respecting the environment is at the core of everything I do. When I am involved in a golf course project, such as the construction of GlenArbor Golf Club in Bedford Hills, I require that everyone involved share this respect. At my company, Gary Player Design, we have particularly focused on one of earth’s most precious resources – water. Protecting water quality and conserving water are not only fundamental responsibilities for our industry, but also translates into real cost savings for golf course operations. The New York State golf course superintendents associations, as well as researchers at Cornell University, are to be commended for recently establishing the Best Management Practices for New York State Golf Courses, providing a foundation for environmental stewardship. – Gary Player, January 2014
